Multi-touch application with 3D globe for various platforms

Industry in Upper Austria is considered an important growth engine for the Austrian economy. To mark the 70th anniversary of the Industrial Association of Upper Austria in June 2017, an interactive installation was to be created that would clearly illustrate the organization’s key themes while also serving as an attractive program item for the event.

Concept and use of the presentation on multiple platforms

Ars Electronica Solutions was commissioned to design and implement the installation. Garamantis implemented the application so that it could be used in three situations:

At the anniversary event, it supported the supporting program as a large-format projection and provided visual content for the moderators and audience. Afterwards, the solution was reused as a permanent multi-touch installation at the headquarters in Linz. In addition, a mobile version was created that is available at any time for external appointments, lectures, and presentations.

Interactive 3D globe as the central user interface

At the heart of the software is an interactive 3D globe. It displays geographical contexts, statistical data, and various media formats such as text, graphics, video, and animation. Users can freely rotate the globe and zoom in continuously to a high level of detail. This allows content to be explained both in overview and in detail, depending on how much time and interest is available at the moment.

Editorial “stories” on key topics

The media content has been editorially prepared and integrated into the application in such a way that predefined, interactive “stories” are created. Visitors can explore this content themselves and delve deeper into it step by step. The focus is on the most important topics for the Upper Austrian Industrial Association: globalization and exports, new technologies, innovation through investment, the environment and resources, and mobility.

Content management and updating

A web-based content management system (CMS) forms the basis for operation. This allows the customer to update, add to, or replace content at any time without having to redevelop the application. This ensures that the installation remains usable in the long term—both on site and for changing presentation occasions.
