Facebook, Twitter & Co. – everywhere we go we leave a data trail. The permanent exhibition “Out of Control” in cooperation with Ars Electronica has been on view since October 2018, with the aim to raise awareness for where we disclose our personal data and how we move about the digital world.

Fourteen temporary containers located in the gardens of the Vienna Chamber of Labor feature a total of nine stations, e.g. on the topic of social media, big data or password security. Particularly at the interactive stations, it’s all about joining in. From the history of the World Wide Web over hacked passwords and only seemingly deleted text messages to the power of smartphones and big data – everything is conveyed in a playful manner, showing for each context which data are relevant, what they are used for, and how it is possible to protect one’s privacy. On behalf of Ars Electronica, Garamantis had the opportunity to realize some of these interactive terminals.

Theinstallation “Big Data” symbolizes data streams by means of a high-resolution particle effect. On a touchscreen, visitors can find their own entry point to various subject areas and trigger videos that play on two separate monitors.

The station “Your invisible companion” makes use of a 2 x 1 meter interactive projection mapped mural that combines a printed surface with multi-touch features and animated content. Via touch‑gesture on the printed surface, different areas come to life and are visualized dynamically. The mural shows, for instance, which personal data find their way into the cloud –and to large internet corporations such as Facebook, respectively. A calibration‑tool facilitates the animations’ simple and effective calibration with the corresponding mural prints.
